Being One With What Is

The Self accepts everything that appears

Non-duality is a spiritual approach that transcends the oppositions and divisions inherent in our usual perception of the world. One of the fundamental assertions of this path is that “the Self accepts whatever appears.” This sentence, at first glance simple, actually opens the door to a deep understanding of the nature of existence and consciousness.

The Self as an unalterable witness

In the tradition of Advaita Vedanta, the Self (or Atman) is seen as pure, immutable and omnipresent consciousness. It is not affected by fluctuations of the mind, emotions or external events. Thus, everything that appears – thoughts, sensations, experiences – is simply observed by the Self, without judgment or rejection. This acceptance is not a voluntary act, but a characteristic inherent in the very nature of consciousness.
The classic analogy of the sky and the clouds illustrates this idea well: the sky does not refuse passing clouds, it welcomes them without being affected by their presence or absence. In the same way, the Self remains unchanged, whatever experience manifests within it.

The illusion of separation

Identification with the mind and body gives us the illusion of a “me” distinct from the rest of the world. This separation creates pain and conflict, as we constantly seek to attract certain experiences and repel others. By realizing that the Self accepts everything that appears, we begin to see that this struggle is futile and illusory.

Total acceptance of the present moment does not mean passive resignation, but a profound recognition that everything that manifests is already included in the natural order of things. Rejecting an experience only fuels division and strengthens the ego. On the contrary, openness and acceptance allow a gradual dissolution of mental resistance.

The end of the inner conflict

When we stop wanting to change or control what is, we find deep peace. This peace does not come from the satisfaction of a desire or the avoidance of suffering, but from the recognition that, fundamentally, everything is already welcomed by consciousness. Inner silence is revealed when we are no longer at war with ourselves.

Practically, this can translate into an attitude of letting go in everyday situations. Observing an emotion without trying to suppress it, listening to an internal judgment without adhering to it, welcoming a physical sensation without interpretation... All of this contributes to the integration of this truth that the Self accepts everything that appears.

Understanding that the Self accepts whatever appears frees us from the constant need for control and resistance. By aligning ourselves with this acceptance, we discover an unshakeable serenity, present in us always. This understanding marks an essential turning point in the path of non-duality, where recognition of the true Self transcends all illusions of the mind.
